CONSERVATION CONCERNS

According to some estimates, the Mata Atlantica of the beginning of the 21st century covers no more than 5 to 10% of the area it covered in pre-Colombian times. In more recent times, 3this decline is essentially due to the progressive conversion of land to farming and to urban development.

In the absence of accurate surveys and despite recent discoveries of previously unknown populations of Pernambuco, it is generally accepted that the reduction in the natural habitat is leading to the decline of the species.

This raises the question of the conservation of Pau-Brazil.

Bowmakers and others involved in the music profession intend to do all they can to contribute to the conservation and regeneration of this species.

Pau-Brazil occurs principally in low-lying coastal areas and large plains
		In the 16th century, the Mata Atlantica covered practically all of the Atlantic seaboard from south of Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Norte and spread 80 to 150 kilometres inland
